NARACAULI VEGETATION TEST

Mineral reagents were used to immobilize toxic bio-available metals in mineral mining waste to support micro-organisms in the generation of soil for vegetation

Summary

Geochemical technology was used in an European Union demonstration project (FP7 Umbrella) along river Naracauli (Ingurtosu, Arbus, SW Sardinia). The surface of abandoned zinc ore waste of the Brassey processing plant was treated with transformed bauxite refinery residue and/or inoculated with bacteria, Mycorrhizae and then planted with Euphorbia pythiusa.

The growth rate of the plants in function of the treatment of the ore processing waste was monitored for one year, to establish optimum conditions for development of natural cover systems for mine tailings and waste dumps by means of soil generation and vegetation.
